Winter Place Farm
was the original idea of Winter Place Farm was the original idea of Mr. & Mrs. James B. Caine of Salisbury, Maryland Built in the 1968 for there daughter Bradley. It was the most opulent horse farm of it‘s time. It included three magnificent chandeliers in the main indoor arena, with mirrors lining the indoor ring, fountains, whirlpools with tiled mosaics and a swimming pool for the privileged equines. A beautiful Carriage House included a gift shop and was the home to many beautifully restored driving vehicles. Winter Place Farm was written up in every major publication in the country including The New York Times, and Sports Illustrated. It was visited by horseman from around the world, who just had to see it for themselves. Including HRH Princess Anne. The list of equine residents reads like the history books of horse showing in the U.S. You will find the names of many of these famous horses on many of the most priceless trophies at the most prestigious horse shows in this country. Some of the all time greats included: Gozzi, Royal Blue, Ruxton, Magic Parade, Striking, Across The Nation, County Commissioner, Logically, Old Dominion, Perfect Stranger, Rivet, Beguiled, On Target, Southside, and of course the most famous of all, the immortal Jet Run. Jet Run won a gold medal at the Pan Am Games after being sold to Mexico. Jet Run returned to the U.S. when purchased by F. Eugene Dixon of Erdenhiem Farm in Pennsylvania and partnered with Michael Matz. This partnership won every major show jumping event in the U.S. Some of them more then once! It was the material that legends are made of. Although Bradley had many to choose from, her all time personal favorite remains her large pony, Checkmate and her Junior Hunter, Across The Nation. Checkmate and Nation took Bradley to many Championships throughout the country and established Bradley’s love for horses. Checkmate was retired at the Washington International Horse Show when it was still held at the Armory in downtown D.C. A huge party was held in Checkmate’s honor after his last trip out of the show arena with a blanket of roses that drug on the ground. The list of riders that rode for Winter Place was just as impressive as it’s equine residents. How could you not win with the likes of future Olympians Melanie Smith, and Katie Monahan (Prudent). Bernie Traurig, Robert Ridland, Mike Elmore, Scott Neederlander, Jane Womble (Gaston), and Brenda Watson . You knew you were in for a treat when you saw Winter Place Farm’s two stainless steel Aero-Liner tractor trailers, six horse van and equipment van roll into the show grounds. You were about to witness history in the making. Joyce W. Caine was instrumental in establishing Winter Place Farm and daughter Bradley’s lifetime love for horses. Bradley still trains to this day.
