history....
Although
the offer was very attractive because of it's existing
facilities, it would not be so easily transformed. Many of the
structures and fences had been left to decay when the facility
had closed almost a decade earlier. There would be a lot
of time and money put into the facility to make it usable.
There were also other concessions to be made. The property
here was smaller and wouldn't offer room for Cross Country
Events or Fox Hunting. But, the member of the society saw
it as an opportunity to move forward with the project.
There were many work party events as the members transformed the
decayed farm into a place worthy of it's name. Fences were
repaired and replaced, drainage systems were put in place, a new
roof was added to the barn and many other small jobs were
undertaken by volunteers to make the equestrian center what it
is today.
Funding was a large issue for the team working on the
equestrian center. To make their dream come true, they needed to
raise a lot of money. There were quite a large variety of
events that began to take shape in 1993. Casino Nights,
Llama Driving Clinics, Murder Mystery Trail Rides, Winter Fair ,
even The Herrmanns Original Royal Lipizzan Stallions
performed at WEC. All proceeds allowed the members to further
the cause.
On April 9 1993 the dream began to come to life. The new
Wicomico Equestrian Center
hosted it first event with a horse show sponsored by the
Pittsville Lions Club. In conjunction with the event the
equestrian center also hosted it's kick off gala. Two other
events took place that year, the Salisbury Moose Lodge Horse Show and the Devon Memorial Show took place on
June 26 & 27.
Over the years, the Wicomico Equestrian Center has been
the host of numerous equestrian events. The facility/membership
sponsors several events each year, from which the proceeds keep
the facility operational and moving forward.
As the WEC has moved into the 21th century, members of the
equestrian center and the community continue to fuel it's
growth.
The beautiful well manicured grounds provide an excellent backdrop
for equestrian events. There are 34 stalls available for
overnight guest and ample room to accommodate numerous portable stalls.
There is a large parking area on the north side of the grounds with
running water in the trailer area. There are two grass rings and one
sand ring. Jump courses are available as well.
